Abstract
The purposes of this study were to identify safety education and management factors related to the organizat~onal safety climate in Korean manufacturing companies. The original population size of Korean manufacturing factory was 74,398 and 2,960 factories were selected by the multlple stratified sampling method. The health and safety manager or representatives of the selected 2,960 factories successfully finished the face-to-face interview survey about management, education, culture of works~te safety conducted by the Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency. The survey factories were statistically weighted by 23 industry classification codes, 5 size categories, and 16 regions (8 metropolitan and 8 rural regions) throughout analysis. Trained interviewers vis~ted the target factories and interviewed the factory managers or representatives. The structured interview questionnaire asked general characteristics, safety management, safety education, perceived safety culture of workplace. All survey responses were anonymously coded into the SPSS program and testified in Chi-square, t-test, simple correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The factories In Seoul and Kyungi areas, small factory slze, and clothing and press industries were related to low safety management, safety education, and safety culture at work. Only 45.6% of the survey factories allowed 2 hour or more per month to safety education for their general employees. Futureless, at least 8 hour legal regulation of newcomer safety education was observed only in the 18.2% factories of all. Worksite safety culture scores had a strong correlation with worksite safety managerial activities (I= .70) rather than safety organization or safety education at work. This result was also confirmed In the findings of hierarchical regression analysis on worksite safety culture. Safety managerial activities at work explained 42% variance of safety culture scores, and then health and safety management (5.7%), and education (2.1%) in order.
